A Community Social-Emotional Learning Art Experience
What if kindness wasn’t just something we talked about…
but something we could actually SEE?
The Waves of Kindness is a hands-on art experience where children, families, and community members create a visible ripple effect of caring. Each participant designs a personal pennant that becomes part of a larger display – showing how individual acts of kindness come together to strengthen a whole community.
Inspired by The Magic of Making a Difference – One CAN Make a Difference and created through All Ways Learning, this project turns a simple moment of reflection into a powerful shared experience.
At the heart of the Waves of Kindness experience is the foundational message from the book The Magic of Making a Difference: One CAN Make a Difference. This story introduces students to the power of kindness, empathy, and individual action—setting the emotional and reflective foundation for the art and SEL activities that follow.
WHAT IT IS
Participants decorate a vinyl pennant using drawings, words, stickers, or short messages about kindness.
Each pennant is attached to a cord and connected with other pennants to form a large “Wave of Kindness” display – a living mural of compassion created by the people themselves.
Children immediately understand the message:
My actions matter.
I matter.
We matter together.
The display becomes a daily reminder that small choices make a big difference.
A Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Experience Through Art
Waves of Kindness is more than an art project—it is a meaningful, student-centered social-emotional learning experience that strengthens school climate, builds character, and nurtures connection. Through creative expression and guided reflection, students actively practice the five core Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies recognized nationwide.
The 5 SEL Competencies Developed Through Waves of Kindness
- Self-Awareness- Students reflect on their own emotions, strengths, values, and experiences with kindness.
- Self-Management-Students practice managing emotions, focusing attention, and making thoughtful choices.
- Social Awareness-Students develop empathy and understanding for others’ perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences.
- Relationship Skills-Students strengthen communication, cooperation, and collaboration.
- Responsible Decision-Making-Students learn to make caring, ethical, and constructive choices.

WHY IT MATTERS
In today’s world, many children and adults struggle with a sense of belonging, empathy, and connection.
The Waves of Kindness gives communities a simple, joyful way to practice social-emotional learning in action – not as a lesson, but as an experience.
This project supports the five core SEL competencies:
Self-Awareness — recognizing feelings and strengths
Self-Management — positive emotional expression
Social Awareness — understanding others
Relationship Skills — collaboration and kindness
Responsible Decision-Making — actions that impact others
When people see their pennant hanging alongside others, they understand something powerful:
Kindness spreads.
HOW IT WORKS
The project is intentionally simple and easy to implement:
• Each participant takes 3–5 minutes
• 10 participants can create at a time
• Materials are easy to use
• Setup is minimal
You provide the space.
We guide the experience.
The finished display can hang in:
hallways, fences, cafeterias, libraries, community centers, or outdoor gathering areas.
And once installed, the display continues teaching kindness long after the event is over. Additional cords with pennants can be tied together to extend the impact and message.
