FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How long does the Waves of Kindness™ experience take?
Waves of Kindness™ is designed to be flexible and can easily fit into your schedule. Schools may choose to complete the activity in a single class period, during lunch or recess, as part of an assembly, at a family engagement event, or over several days. Most participants complete their pennant in 3-5 minutes, while the overall experience can be adapted to fit your school’s needs. An additional Reflection Time is highly recommended once the activity has been culminated. Suggested prompts for the Reflection Time are included in the Waves of Kindness Coordinator Guidebook.
Who can participate?
Everyone!
Waves of Kindness™ is designed to bring people together. Students, teachers, administrators, support staff, parents, grandparents, community volunteers, local businesses, service clubs, and faith organizations can all participate. The more voices represented, the more meaningful the display becomes.
How many students can participate?
The program is scalable.
Whether you’re working with one classroom, an entire grade level, a whole school, or an entire community, Waves of Kindness™ can be adapted to fit your needs. Our standard school kits are designed to accommodate approximately 90 participants, using both front and back of each pennant. Multiple kits can easily be combined for larger events. Typically, 5-6 students can be working at the same time on a section of the pennant cord when using a six foot table.
Can the display be used indoors or outdoors?
Yes!
Pennants can be displayed indoors in hallways, libraries, cafeterias, multipurpose rooms, gyms, or entryways. They can also be displayed outdoors during special events, community celebrations, and family engagement activities. Many schools choose to begin outdoors during an event and then move the display indoors for continued inspiration.
How much space is needed?
Very little.
Typically, the project can be laid out on top of the cafeteria tables, outdoor picnic tables, or portable tables set up in a designated area. Completed pennants are hung on lightweight cords that can be displayed in a hallway, across a multipurpose room, in a library, cafeteria, or other gathering space. Displays can be customized to fit almost any location, from a single classroom wall to an entire school entrance.
How much preparation is required?
Very little. Waves of Kindness™ was intentionally designed to be easy for busy educators and community leaders to implement.
Each Waves of Kindness™ Kit includes everything needed to facilitate a meaningful experience, including a comprehensive Coordinator Guidebook, easy-to-follow implementation instructions, discussion prompts, and all the materials needed to create a beautiful community display. Most schools spend only a short amount of time organizing materials before participants begin creating.
At the heart of every Waves of Kindness™ experience is the award-winning children’s book, “The Magic of Making a Difference: One CAN Make a Difference”, along with “The Magic of Making a Difference Coloring Book,” both of which are included in every kit. Together, these resources provide a powerful foundation for meaningful conversations about kindness, empathy, gratitude, responsibility, and making a positive difference.
The activities are thoughtfully designed to reinforce the five CASEL Social-Emotional Learning competencies—Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision-Making—helping educators extend the experience into classroom discussions and lasting learning.
These resources help transform a creative art activity into a meaningful Social-Emotional Learning experience.
Can parents and community members participate?

One of the unique strengths of Waves of Kindness™ is bringing together students, families, educators, and community members to create a shared expression of kindness and belonging.
